Sounds like it's the starter switch. I don't know exactly what you call it, but on Mavericks the starter is actually engaged by a switch at the base of the steering column. It's pushed by a rod that attaches to the keyed "ignition" switch. I'm sure there are others here that can explain this better, but simply put it's just a simple switch that engages and disengages the starter. When your friend replaces it, he or she should make sure that the ignition switch is returning all the way back to the "run" position to make sure not to burn up another one.
