Fort Rucker, Alabama....

It's been awhile since I heard that phrase. I used to be an instructor there. It seems like it was about a thousand years ago. Couldn't have been though...I'm only 34. I taught IERW for OH-58's...both Charley's and Deltas. Mostly Systems and Emergency Procedures. I tried to teach those guys the best way to deal with what were referred to at the time as ..ahem... "SIGNIFICANT EMOTIONAL EVENTS". I guess the actual term would be getting the living S&*T scared out of you. Nothing gets the old adrenal glands a workout like clipping along at about 100 knots NOE and having the
"Engine Out" light shining in your face. One of my favorite things to tell students was that if you absolutely KNEW that you were going down, and that nothing that you could do would help, then the only thing you could do was to throw your helmet into the back-seat, turn around backwards, and sit on the cyclic stick. It won't really help you any...but it will sure as hell make the crash investigation team work for their money ;-)

Later,
Tom Stone

PS...I have a younger cousin that just graduated from Ft. Rucker and is now assigned to DC patrolling in a AH-64 Apache. I taught him everything he knows... ;-)

Actually I maintain and fly four helicopters and two jets for a real estate developer that lives in California. He also flies the helicopters. I live and keep the aircraft at my hangar in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. There are some more pics of the Cobra at my website, www.coloradoriverheli.com. It is a AH-1P that was used for training in Fort Rucker, Alabama. It never saw any war action, but we do have a UH-1H Huey that was in Vietnam. The Cobra is a blast to fly! We had it in the movie "The Siege" with Bruce Willis and Denzel Washington. It comes in and blows up a building, all of about 10 seconds worth
