JC- I hope I can be of some help on the "short",you might first try checking out your light switch. Sounds like either the switch or associated wiring to the fuse block may have a short. Try replacing the switch...if the problem still persist...it may be a wiring short between the switch and fuse block. Your voltage meter is probably going nuts when your light switch goes to a "short", and only your headlights lights going out makes me believe that the short is in the switch. It is helpful that you had the problem in the evening when your lights were illuminated....but awfully dangerous. I think most auto parts stores will have a replacemnet switch. I recently had a problem with my 1970 Trans Am Javelin where the battery would not charge. I replaced everything only to discover that the alternator will not charge unless the alternator light is working. Mine was burnt out..replaced same and all is fine now. The lesson...electrical problems can drive you nuts and cost you a ton of money. On the other hand a lot of folks will dump a good vehicle because of a 50 cent lamp. Good luck !!!!
