I just did the exact same thing with my 77 Comet. It has almost the same mileage. Chances are, you're right about the valve guides after a lot of years. If nothing else, they just dry up. Mine hadn't had a hard life, but when I pulled the bearing on the crank, I saw copper. We did a "cheap rebuild", as the clearances weren't bad. Honed it out, new rings & bearings, Edelbrock Performer intake, rebuilt 4100 4V carb, headers, late model heads. I lucked out & found a floor shifter & steering column the same color as the interior, as column shift goes right thru the header! This effectively doubles the HP of the motor. (big deal- it started w/ 137!!) But it had 49K when I got it and it's a good car. A lot of this, I had on the shelf, but for $300-500, if it gives it another 100K miles, it's a good investment.
