My friend, who gave me fresh 1968 302 heads is trying to convince to go with a 351w. I'm not opposed to chopping the shock towers....but is there any other thing else that might pose a problem? Also what about using the 302 heads on a 351 until I save up? stay with a 302 in your maverick. yeah, a 351 windsor is capable of more power... but its not going to be particularly difficult to overpower your maverick with a wimpy 302.
also note just how well a 302 fills a maverick engine bay. imagine it with a 351! cut shock towers, no spark plug access, front end sagging from excess weight, a handling nightmare!
i know there are several who have 351 windsors and clevelands in their mavericks. heck, its possible to put in even bigger motors. i question if bigger is always better. did you know you could stroke a 302 out to 347 and maintain the same weight and diminsions?
302's do respond well to aftermarket parts. do yourself a favor and keep it simple, unless you have a big budget, and dont mind driving a compromised car.
that lil 302 is an overachiever. in a light bodied car like a maverick... its the best available powerplant. MT
