well, i must say that your cam selection is vital when building your cleveland. obviously that has a lot to do with the revability. with those massive intake ports, you really need a high lift/short duration cam. the wonderful thing about a cleveland is that it can flow a lot of fuel into the combustion chamber. unfortunately, the exhaust ports are worthless. when TRYING to exit the combustion chamber.. they have to flow over a hump and then straight down. this is what kills lowend response to a cleveland. it wont really make power until it gets some revs. (racers will slice a big slab out of a cleveland head to help the exhaust problem) well... you have to start compromising by putting in stall speeds and smaller gears. this will get you to your rev limit very quickly. (whatever that is)
i dont care if the limit is only 4500 rpm, so long as i am going very fast when i get there. also, it is so easy to over-carburete. yet even a stock engine can use a big carburetor once it gets rolling. a cleveland is a very moody engine. these are reasons i opted for an RV cam. usually you select your cam to help draw down more fuel and air. with those big valves, a big cam isnt really necessary. as a matter of fact, even boss and high performance cams for clevelands werent that big. anyway... i never meant to insinuate that a cleveland wouldnt rev far enough. i guess i just expected with its breathing capability, it would rev further and have more topend power than it did. (not that it was bad) finally, did yall ever look at the advertised rpm ranges for aftermarket cleveland engines?
:=Your bone stock clevelands certainly aren't made to rev. RV cams are made for torque, of course it lost its power up in the higher RPMs. Clevelands are some of the best engines to build for high RPMs, none of yours were built for it though. |
