there was much more damage like you said. I have i chipped up piston. my number 2 piston is really messed up and im not sure why. im not sure what caused it to end up like it is, but it explains my horrible gas mileage and my loos of power
...............................
I'm sorry that the fears have proven to be. Take a good look at the piston tops and try to detect what has happened. Something has either gotten into the chamber and tried to lock up rotation or top piston ring land broke. Depends on what the surface distress looks like.
An experience I had one time with a 4 cycle BRIGG'S modified kart engine was after the fact, just taking a good long look at the pieces, It became evident that one end of the rod cap broke and seperated away from the rod and on the next rotation rod came off, then crank came around, hit the rod in the center 'semi round dent mark on the rod' and rifled it right thru the front of the block and pulling the wrist pin boss apart from the piston. This was at 9000 RPM yet and picked the remains of the rod off the track. It does pay to take a look to see if assembly was at fault or if it was just a part that broke to guard against it happening again.
Good luck, Ken

:=:=ok guys ive got a real puzzler for yall, ive got a 74 mav with a 250, and lately its really ran like crap. ITs symtoms are dieseling (running after engine is off) and terrible smoking and exhaust leaks. I narrowed the problems down to either timing chain is stretched or bad valves.( note the other day when my engine was smoking i cheked it out and the exhaust manifold was bright red and loo0ked like it was aboout to melt) so im at my wits end trying to find the problem. And ive also noticed a great loss in power, this might be due to the exhaust leaks witch will be fixed this weekend. I apprieciate your help.

:=............................
:=Jim, if the engine got that hot, there is likley more damage. Very late ignition timing will show up this sort of result. The larger part of combustion is taking place too late in the cycle with the exhaust valve open is why the manifold got so hot. The exhaust valves being so hot is igniting the new charge instead of the spark plug and of course the power will be way down do to the loss of cylinder pressure. Don't know what happened but you nearly have to start over again with the engine to see what all is wrong.. Know you don't want to hear that but!
:=Best of luck,Ken
