Jimmy,
I see you've got some pretty serious problems there. I wanted to pass on a little bit of my experience from the past just in case you haven't yet figured out what caused the problem to begin with. I used to manage a Midas Muffler shop. I had several cars come into our shop over the years in which the catalytic converter was stopped up and it caused the exact same symptons you described...loss of power, glowing exhaust, exhaust leaks, and so on. I'm not positive about the 74 having a converter on it but if it does, I would highly recommend checking it out before you hook the exhaust back up on the new engine. Hope this helps.

ok guys ive got a real puzzler for yall, ive got a 74 mav with a 250, and lately its really ran like crap. ITs symtoms are dieseling (running after engine is off) and terrible smoking and exhaust leaks. I narrowed the problems down to either timing chain is stretched or bad valves.( note the other day when my engine was smoking i cheked it out and the exhaust manifold was bright red and loo0ked like it was aboout to melt) so im at my wits end trying to find the problem. And ive also noticed a great loss in power, this might be due to the exhaust leaks witch will be fixed this weekend. I apprieciate your help.
Jimmy
