We use a glass material that is in tiny beads. I got it through
a company called granger. I don't know if it's normal to use sand as that is all i have ever seen used. I do know that you can get different grades of the beads for different purposes.
i would look around. the stuff we use is fairly expensive too but does an exelent job.
