yes it has to come out. The torque converter on the auto has a 1.375" pilot, almost the same size as the hole in the end of the crank. to take out the pilot bearing, stuff the hole full of grease, then find a piece of broomstick or something similar that will fit snugly inside the bearing. Pound it into the bearing, and the force of the grease behind the bearing will force it out. Or you could go buy a puller, but that costs $$$.
