The owner of a Stearman Biplane wanted a different style ignition harness put on his airplane. He had a chrome shop so he chromed everything, including a new set of spark plugs. I installed everything which included hooking a new set of wires to the mags. After about a week I was ready to start it. It would only backfire. During the course of troubleshooting it, I pulled a spark plug and watched it while cranking it over, just to confirm that it was getting spark. Well after 4 weeks of working on it off and on, removing and reinstalling the mags multiple times, intake gaskets, running the valves, etc. etc, I finally find out that the ONLY spark plug getting any fire is the one I was checking. Seems you can't chrome the outside of the spark plugs, or else someone dropped the entire rack, which ruined them all but one.
