I once did the custom look on door panels (front and back) in a '64 Falcon. I used wrinkled black naughyde for material, a 1/2" thick foam bed pad and an old bed sheet. I put masking tape every 1 1/2" and had my Mom run it through the sewing machine. The stiches compressed the foam and gave it a rolled look. I played with it a few times and the 1 1/2" was the look that worked best for me.
