Hi All,
I was looking through the Auto Krafters' Catalogue and I noticed that in the rear brake drum section they have three different sizes listed. Is this accurate? It says:
'70-'73 have 9"x 1 1/2" or 10"x 1 3/4"
'74-'75 have 10"x 2 1/2"
I have a 73 V8 car with LDO, what brakes would I have. Also if this is true, how much of a pain would it be to change to the 10"x 2 1/2"? Would I just have to find a newer donor mav/comet and get the rear brakes off that? Thanks for all your help, you people are great.

There were no brake shoes that wide on these cars. It would not be advisable to change to larger shoes in the rear as it upsets the front to rear braking proportion, thus rear lockup would occurr. The front to rear is about 70-30 +/- . This is an issue when doing a brake system changes away from the factory setup. Proportioning of the front to rear needs to be closely found for the best stopping power.
As an example, I did the change to front disc with 10" drums still on the rear. Used an early 80s Mustang proportioing valve which resulted in the rear locking up befre the front. This was good as it allowed me to install an adjustable control valve in the line to the rear to reduce the pressure and get the best balance. This balance is also affected by weight, tire size and rubber compound and brake hardware.
I know its more than you ask but I thought the info needed to be offered as these questions come up often and are important to saftey.
Ken
