Why wouldn't you want a Maverick? Sure people can brush these great little cars off as nothing, without much of a second thought, but once they take the time and effort to think about them, they realize "Hey Maverick aren't that bad." One of the problems is that people don't know about them (in my area at least) and since they never knew they existed they figured they were pieces of junk. You know what I mean, "Well, I haven't heard of them, so they must be trash." I am only 16, but I love Mavericks. My oldest brother (21 now) got a 1973 6-cylinder, 2-door Mav for his first car when he got his license. I was only 10 or 11 at that time, but the car gradually grew on me and I knew I wanted one when I got my license. In October 2001, I found my Maverick. It too was a '73 2-door, but with factory V8, automatic, and air conditioning. I am restoring mine right now, and we still have his tucked away neatly in the barn. It's funny to see the reactions of different people when you tell them you need something because you are restoring a Maverick. Half the people say, "A what?" while a few say "Oh.". The best feeling thought is when you come across the few that know the cars and what they can truly be. A man who works at the local Ford parts counter used to have a '71 Grabber and he loved it. Another, at Napa Auto Parts, knew what they were and he liked them a lot. When I finish it up this summer, I am sure I will get pleanty of comments about it. It will definintely be different in my town. Not many people have Mavericks (or Comets for that matter) and especially not fixed up ones. I already have people waiting in anticipation for when it is done. A few people at the car shows at Fosters Freeze, have encouraged me to bring it when it is done, because they would really like to see it; "Not many of those around." This one guy, with a '67 Mustang with a 514 in it was real excited about the prospect and told me I had to come down to the shows when it was done. I plan to keep my Maverick forever, as not only is it different, but it's my first car. As I see it, "Why WOULDN'T I own a Maverick?" I am sure I can think of a more snappy answer when I am asked this question. I am very protective of my Maverick. I wish everyone the very best New Year!
