As Earl mentioned, e-mail harvesters gather e-mails which are then sold to spammers and they then spam the heck out of you. At the bottom of most spam e-mail there is a "remove" option that you may of used to remove your e-mail from future mailings. By doing this, the spammer knows there is someone reading the e-mail and they will send some more!

Another way to confirm that someone is opening the e-mail is by sending a nice HTML e-mail with graphics. Once you open the e-mail, the graphics are loaded off the spammer's server and each e-mail has a uniquely named 1x1 transparent graphic which is linked to your email. The spammer now knows who is opening the junk mail and will spam you again.

So what do you do to cut down on spam? Get a free e-mail account at yahoo.com and use it for posting on forums, etc. If the spam gets out of control or you keep getting mysterious attachments, close it and open a new one.

You can also set up an e-mail filter to cut down on the junk mail.
