No, it is not necessary. I ran my 70 Mav. 302, pushing almost 400 horse with slicks with 4.56 gears(9inch rear) on the drag strip for a year with no problem. It stiffens up the frame and unless your building horsepower motor you do not have to have them. But if you can put them on I would.
