Drove an hour yesterday to pillage a 1971 Comet four door (everybody's parts car ... even Comet guys ... ). This car apparently came from Oklahoma to FL circa 1992 ... still had the OK license plate on the front. FL only uses rear plates, so a lot of folks keep an old one from home on the front. This car's last registration was 12/2010, so I am betting the owner finally came to terms with it being so rusty that he wasn't going to register it again. The car smelled like wet dog inside. This car was done. Probably drove it to the yard. I removed more things by breaking rusty bolts than by properly removing them. Took the valence off by ripping the fenders with pliers ... the bolt heads rounded off as they crumbled. Makes me glad I live here ... cars wear out here ... not rust out. Got a very nice bumper hanging off the worst swiss cheese frame brackets. .... and ... best of all .... it was half-price day at the yard.
Sounds like a good day! My shopping was about the same, went to pull-a-part in Birmingham yesterday. Got me another mini starter off of a 5.0 Exploder, and got a power door lock for the wife's Jeep. Looked at the heads on the Exploder to see if they were GT 40's, but didn't see the three lines on the end. I think it was too old to have them anyway. More fun than fighting a bunch of idiots over waffle makers!
The only thing I bought yesterday was a set of these in 15X7. I felt like they were on sale because I found them at Jegs $20-$40 cheaper each than other places I checked with.
Blasphamous!! :16suspect That front plate is strange. I have not been issued a front one since I moved here almost 15 years ago. Also illegal to run with two different plates.. Maybe it was a fun plate.. ?
Better go back and get them All 5.0 factory explorers have gt40 or gt40p heads fwiw. The intake and t/b will bring a little change also
ehhh ... any Mav or Comet that I can disassemble the fender by ripping it between the rust holes is a parts car ... just connecting the dots ... If that Explorer is 95- early 97, those are some early GT40 heads and will work with most headers as a direct replacement on 302s and 351Ws. If it is late 97-on, those are the GT40Ps and have the plug location moved, and that causes problems with most headers. Incidentally, you will only find a 5.0 V8 in 4 door Explorers. The 2 door Sports did not get them from the factory.
I sure couldn't see the three lines on the end of the head . I didn't have my big pull handle and 1/2 sockets anyway. Probably won't get back up there for a couple or three weeks, and they'll probably be gone. Oh well. Maybe I'll find some when I have both the money and my good tools with me!
