I have a 74 maverick v8. About 4 months ago we replaced I think all of the power steering parts except for the pump/reservoir and the steering box. That seemed to go fine, never any leaking after that - just a slight hissing sound turning the wheel hard that never went away. In the last few days I started to notice the steering felt "tighter" while turning the wheel to the left. Everything looks okay with all the parts in appearance except for a tear in the left out tie rod boot which I re-greased to see if it helped while I ordered new tie rods. The steering has become increasingly tighter over the last couple of days as I do drive it a lot. I can feel barely any issues with turning to the right. Fluid is fine. I'm worried that the new controller valve may have already failed on me but not really sure if it could just as likely be something else like the steering box. I need for advice as to what I should be looking at first to try and not just go throwing parts at it. Thank you if anyone has any input!
Disconnect the left tie rod from the knuckle and turn the wheel...If you still have the issue...Its likely the control valve. If the problem goes away, you may have a ball joint binding up on the left side.
You would think so Frank...But I tend to think the problem is actually the control valve. This process should narrow it down pretty quick. Unless the problem is on the right side...
Sorry it took me a while to respond back. Did the ball joints/tie-rod end on that side just to see since the boots were ripped anyway, and while I feel like it has improved (may just be in my head) the issue is not fixed. There's also a sound now turning the wheel either way kind of like a mechanical turn crank. Was hoping it wasn't the brand new (well, re manufactured...) control valve but if I have to do that again so be it. I was also curious that I couldn't find anything about a steering box on rockauto but a steering gear that hasn't actually been replaced with the other power steering parts so I dont know what I should try to replace first.
