    "D1Z" translates to 1971 Comet.

EDIT .... please see below for a fully thought-out answer ...

You've probably forgotten more about these cars than I'll ever know.. but are you sure about that, Jeff?

Seems to me that Ford used the hell out of that prefix on many many different parts over many different models. Not necessarily the year part, D1.. but specifically with the addition of the following Z. Pretty tired from all the engine work lately and I feel dislexic, hopefully that made any sense? LOL

That tag number is the same as the high back seats I pulled out of a '71 Comet.

I did have issues with these seats because my TCI seat foam did not fit the bottoms. Top fit no problem.

LOL .... Busted! Yes .... D1Z does primarily mean 71 Mustang. Had a bit of brain fog when I posted that. It would read correctly if I said ... That seat bottom is appropriate for a 71 Comet.

Ford assigns the part number based on the model they were first designed for. That part number sticks with the part through other models that it also gets used in, until there is a revision, where the part may be changed in design a bit.

Ford designed the seat frame for the 71 Mustang, and then repurposed it with different upholstery for Mav/Comet.If the seat bottom was designed specifically for a Maverick it would be D1D (if that part started use in 71. More likely D0D for most parts,1970) If specifically designed for a Comet it would be D14.

There is a Ford Parts Decoder posted here on this board under Parts Interchange ...

I like what mvw66gt posted too .... it explains a lot of the background reasoning.

    Micah,

What was the problem with TCI foam for the bottom? The side bolsters? I had several seats here, and most had the bolsters shoved down. Had to bend them back up to make stock foam and Mustang covers work.

    Congrats. Good Luck. Enjoy.

Now that it is outside, those short back seats are noticeable. Hope you get that figured out.

Nice amount of tire on it.... looks good. If you change the wheels, those plain Mercury hubcaps go for stooopid money. No logo ... advertise them on eBay as "rat rod" along with Mercury, etc.
