I am replacing the hogs head (center section) of the rear end. Any ideas of how to break it loose from the rear end while you are lying flat on your back. It has never been out. I have pounded until I am worn completly out. Which does not take long any more.
There are copper washers on the studs ,you need to remove them. A small chisel works for me. You did remove the axles?
I have not removed the axles competly was hoping to get it out with out doing the axles completly out. I will check for the copper washers. I was thinking the head would come loose without removing the axles competly. If not all the way out.
If it is stuck, I have seen people lift up on it-slightly-with a bottle or floor jack to break it loose. This may be dangerous, I have no clue. But....it worked when I saw it done. Seth
I just went thru this...the copper washers is most likely what is holding you up...but the axles must be far enough out to clear the center chunk. It will be somewhat difficult to slide out the center chunk because you have to pull it out evenly to clear all the housing studs. It may help to have someone else to gently pry around all sides of the chunk as you try to remove it from the housing.
Those copper washers get squished into the holes and around the threads, making it a major hassle to get it off. I tried all kinds of pry bars, jacking, etc. Spent a while working out the washers, but the stuff in around the threads was there permanently. Ended up using an air chisel... Sounds bad, but do it carefully so you don't mess up the mating edges. Once you get a portion loose, the rest comes off pretty easily.
...don't forget...this thing is full of ...oil get your ...cancatch ...under the center before you break it loose. this is some ...nasty ..stuff...putting it nicely. ...frank...
Interesting...mine wasn't While you have it apart, good time to put in a 1/4" pipe threaded drain plug at the bottom. Use the ones with the recessed allen head so it doesn't get in the way of your jack, or get knocked off from something hitting it while driving.
Thanks for your help guys. I believe the cooper washers are the problem. I tryed to raise the section with a jack and it seemed to dangerous so I stopped. I have a problem getting under a car even with the jack stands on the bottom, it just makes me feel a little quezzy. Yes Frank that oil is very nasty to put it midley. I am done for the night and I will try tomorrow or the weeken I am not in a hurry. Once again thanks for the help.
I got the section out last night and it was the copper washers holding it in. After I removed them it came out pretty easy. I used a floor jack to handle the weight and all I had to do was balance it . Now ready for the other one to go in. I have a section form a pinto and it seems to be about a 3.40 ratio. Does any one know what the different ratios of rears they put in them. My book shows that the biggest they put in mav. was a 3.20 as an option in 1970.
Make sure you silicone on the studs when you reinstall the center section, this will keep the oil from following the threads on studs and leaking. I just replaced mine and the copper washers were holding it on also. Good Luck
I believe the 8 inch in the Maverick only came 2 ways. 2.79 and 3.00 The 3.20 you see listed is probably for the 7.5 rear axle. To verify your ratio count the number of ring gear teeth and divide it by the number of pinion gear teeth.
