No they won't. The only way to use em is to rebalance the 50 oz late model balancer to 28 oz, (or use a 70's 28 oz balancer)then use everything from the timing cover forward on your pre 70 block. Your timing cover may work, depending on which one it is and what FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive) setup you're using. Does this all make sense ? It's generally not feasible to mix FEAD parts among different applications, but some things do work together. Late pulleys don't work on pre 70 balancers, the pulley flange offset is different for the 3 bolt balancer vs the 4 bolt.
well i have a professinal products brand 28oz balancer on my engine would it work on that? take a look at some of my engine pics in my showroom.
If you have a 4 bolt balancer they will work. Ford went to the 4 bolt in 68. You may find some 68s that had a 3 bolt but its not very common. From your question I suppose you are looking to put a serpentine belt on your car. Find a early 80s Crown Vic or pickup truck and get the pulleys off of it, get the Alt pulley also, it will fit your old Alt so you have a complete set. They had a normal rotation water pump on them. The way to tell if you got the right pulleys on the newer set look at the water pump pulley, if it has grooves for the belt it is for a normal rotation pump. If it is smooth where the belt runs then it is for a reverse rotation pump (runs off the back of the serpentine belt). The pulleys have nothing to do with the balance of the engine.
Ford went to the 4 bolt balancers in 1970, not 68. And offset for the crank pulley is different between the 3 and 4 bolt.
It depends on the offset of the crank pulley flange. That's the main difference between the 3 and 4 bolt balancers.
i thnk tha P.P. balancer thats on my engine has holes for 3 and 4 bolt so that shouldnt be an issue. any difference wth tha water pump pulley bolt pattern?
The professional products balancer is very versatile. It does have holes set up for 3- or 4- bolt setups. Also, for a nominal charge, you can order one of 4 or 5 spacers to make up any offset that you need. It also has timing marks for 3 or 4 different timing pointer setups. And, if you ever get a 5.0, you don't need a new balancer. For another nominal charge, you can unscrew the 28-oz weight, and screw on a 50-oz weight. Great balancer for a really fair price.
I stand corrected.................. It was mid to late year 69 when the 4 bolts started to show up. Both 68 289s and 302s had 3 bolt flanges. Sometime in 69 they switched over and all of the 70s and up used the 4 bolt. Even most of the 69 351Ws had 3 bolts. But if you have a 4 bolt balancer the rest of what I said is correct.
As was mentioned make sure you use the correct water pump pulley. Most of the serpentine systems use a reverse rotation water pump, a couple are clockwise rotation but you have to match the water pump pulley with the correct timing cover and pulley. You can't just reverse the rotation of the pump by changing pulleys. Smooth pulley=reverse rotation, grooved or V-pulley=clockwise rotation.
