    Hello,

I am trying to Get a handle on what type of parts that people are discussing in the forum so I can understand some of the posts better. Any help would be great and will probably eliminate me asking a bunch of stupid or basic questions in the future.

I have a 1974 maverick with an inline 6 and a 3 speed automatic with a shifter on the wheel. My questions are:

Is there more than one inline 6 that was offered for the 74 ?

Is there more than one 302 v8 that was offered for the 74?

What type of transmission do I have (I see people saying a lot about c4 transmissions) and what transmissions would "bolt in place".

Are there any aftermarket kits to put disk brakes on the car? I have heard some info on mustang brakes being used on the maverick but I don't know how involved that is.

That's it! Sorry for the questions I just want to make sure I have my facts straight before really digging into the technical forum. Thank you for your help!

:Welcome: welcome to the forum. The maverick had the option of a 170, 200, and 250 inline 6 and only the 302 v8.. The c4 is def the most common trans other than the 3 speed manual.

Welcome to the forum ... definitely the best source for info on these cars.

Here is a good website that documents year-to-year changes that were made...

    http://www.fordmaverick.com/yrtoyr.htm

Regarding disc brakes ... the easiest way to put disc brakes on your car is from the later year Mavs/Comets. They became standard in 76-77 and were optional in 74-75. Also, Granadas and Monarchs in their first body style ... up to 79 or 80 (I forget when they changed)... are essentially the same, too. Be sure to use the outer tie rod ends for whatever spindles that you swap on the car ... other than that, it is a bolt-on.

Glad you are talking better brakes first .... the best mod you can do to your car right now.(y) A search here will give you some good info on all this.

Great info, thanks! With all the brake swaps everyone talks about it never occurred to me to look for another maverick with disks that I could salvage. As far as brakes go when you live in Ohio you know pretty quickly it doesn't matter how fast you go or if your car can make it through the snow if your car can't stop.

For the disc brake swap, if you can afford them. CSRP sells a complete kit.

For the transmission, you have to figure out which bell housing you have. If it's the small housing, not sure what can be put on. If it's the large bell housing I know you can put an AOD on it.

As long as the Granada isn't the later type when they switched over to the Fox platform using front struts the disc brake parts are basically bolt on and go - Lincoln Versailles work too plus will give you a bolt in 9 inch rear if interested :)

About Versailles spindles.... the upper ball joint is different from Monarch/Granada and requires swapping/fabrication to install in a Mav A-arm. Don't ask me why .... seems like the engineers had a reason ....

Which 6 do you have? If it's the 250, your bellhousing bolt pattern will allow several transmissions to bolt to it. Those that mount to 302s will work. I don't know if the one attached to your C4 will work for any other transmissions though, you may need one for the specific transmission. The T5 five speed is a popular swap that I'm doing as well.
