I went out Saturday to the Daytona Speedway spring show. the turn out was kinda disappointing. Very overcast and windy so I think it scared alot of the trailer queens off. not much to report on available parts. There was 1 comet that was for sale and 1 other mav besides mine. my daughter (becca) had an eventful day. we were checking out a highly modified matador when the camera crew filming for the speedway approached her for an interview and her impressions of the car. she actually got to climb in and they filmed the whole thing. It was just her and dad as my wife was unable to attend. i had a blast getting there tho. while cruising the interstate I had one of the new 429r mustangs pull next to us and we ended up toying with each other. i would pass him then he would pass me kinda thing. As we were jockeying, a porce 930 came flying out of nowhere and passed us up. i looked over and the mustang driver just shook his head, downshifted and took off. Not to be outdone I parked the mav right on his bumper and we ran down the porce and passed him somewhere over 110mph. he tried to catch up but until we backed off he was toast. I know it was childish and illegal but DANG it was fun seeing the porce drivers face as 2 fords blew his doors off. the only downside was I broke the drivers side motor mount doing it. oh well, easy fix. i"ll try to post some pics from the show.
Wow that's Awesome!!! I'm sure your daughter will never forget it!! People think were nuts for fixing up Mavericks...I wonder if it was a Pierre Cardin Matador? (I use to work with a guy that had one)
Hey Jason, Sorry we missed each other. I was back with the Cougars back by the clubhouse. You were close by if you saw that black Comet. The Grabber drove through where we were parked and I talked to it's owner for awhile. We had 30 Cougars in attendence. We had a great weekend and took over about half of the Jameson Inn at I-95 & 40. Friday night pizza party, Sat grilled out burgers on the field at Daytona, and an Italian dinner & raffle Sat night at the Jameson. You are right. Overall attendence was down. If it keeps following this trend, there may not be too many more of the Spring shows there. Jim
That brown Grabber belongs to John Jemanolis. He lives somewhere in mid-FL. I usually run into him at the Sumter Swap Meet. (Thinking about setting up there this Sunday). Cool that Becca had a big day. Do you know if this will be broadcast anywhere? There was a custom Matador running around the Clearwater area in the early 80s ... makes me wonder if it is the same one redone once again. Both have had the front bumper shaved. Congrats on breaking the motor mount ... too much power . I have seen guys drill a mount and run a bolt through them to act as a limiter... the rubber still absorbs vibrations, etc, but if the motor tries to torque over, the bolt acts as a stop. You should only have to do this to a driver's side mount. Going to do this to mine the next time the motor is out... I kept breaking the passenger side tailpipe hanger from the twisting it was subjected to.
the brown mav isn"t mine. (as jeff pointed out). mine is a 71 2 door with the engine out of my burned 4 door. not pretty yet but it runs very well. i didn"t take any pics of my car. sorry jeff, i am planning on installing a chain this time to act as an engine stop before ripping another one. great fun tho. the matador owner was from Georgia and has been working on this for 14 years. Alot of custom built fiberglass pieces. porobably not the one from down south. very nice work on the car tho.
I really like that Teardrop scoop on that black comet. I saw a pic on here a ways back of one on a maverick and it just did not look right. The comets front snout makes it blend in the over all look. The car looks hreat my only complaint is the pizza cutter tires.......It needs some new shoes....
My dad went 110 MPH in his stock 302V8 '73 4-door LDO. From what he said that was the top out speed for the car.
mine was taching at about 5700 at 110 rpm and was continuing to pull. remember i still have factory 3:00 gears. the only thing i didn"t like about the black comet was the stance. it looked very nose high. i would drop the front down several inches. it"s for sale too. $8900 if anyone is interested i got his number i"m sure it will be available on the website. they always sell videos from each year. you just have to look up the spring speedway show or goto turkeyrun.com and they usually have a link to the spring show. i"m gonna try to find it for Becca. I keep telling her that guys are suckers for a pretty blue eyed blonde and all she has to do is smile at most to get extra perks.
