I’m trying to take my gas tank off in a 1973 comet gt and well the bolts are so rusted and I used so much force that the bolts unscrewed from their mounts and are just spinning instead of the bolt so I don’t know what to do.

did you lube the bolts to start with? if not lube them now and let them set a while. then put vice grips on the nut and pull down hard as you turn the nut.

If above does not work, you may have to carefully grind the nut(s) off. The fasteners are Carriage Bolts (square shoulder below the head) which fits into a "slotted" channel, would recommend replacing with Stainless Steel Carriage Bolts/Nuts and you may have to straighten the slot, as it may have enlongated when the carriage bolt spun. Good Luck!

If they are spinning......no need to cut them. Just take a hammer and beat them in the direction toward the hole so they will drop out of the holes. It will work.
