In my 77 Maverick it has no temperature light or gauge, I was wondering how do I install an after market gauge to the 4.1 engine?

    if i remember correctly

in the back of the head(drivers side) you should see a sensor thats hooked up to a wire that runs to the instrument panel...when you buy an aftermarket gauges they come with a fitting(and adapters) that goes into there.

What color is that wire? And why would I have a sensor and a wire going to my instrument panel if its not going to tell me if the motor is overheating.

Take it to a professional, since you're not familiar enough with auto mechanics to perform the installation yourself...

No. You asked how to install an after-market Temp gauge. There is not a wire that you connect it to. You would run all new wire to the sending unit (if it's an electric gauge) or you would run a mechanical temp sensor if it's a mechanical gauge. I'd do it for you if you were here, but since you're not, you need to find someone where you are to help you. It's hard to explain here to someone who's not familiar with these things...

Usually a mechanical gauge comes with complete instructions and all needed hardware to hookup. The sending unit is located on the drivers side rear of the motor on a 250-6. I went out and looked. There are 2 in that vicinity, one is oil and is completely on the side of the motor, the temp one is actually on the back of the motor. This is a very very easy install. Have the autoparts store you are dealing with sell you a NEW sending unit that is mechanical.
