Hey all you guys that are currently running or have run in the past one of these little inline 6s, got a question for you. My engine has a bit of a ping when it is under a load, like pulling a hill. What is a good way to alleviate this problem, any quick fixes?
    Thanks,
    CommieHook

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
what kind of pinging is it?

A lot of times an exhaust leak gets confused with denotation and these engines have doughnut gaskets that go out all the time and the repro's suck.

I've had to change out the one in the Falcon 4 times in the 10 years it's been in the family. Finally found a good stock one at the junkyard that's lasted the longest.

What about octane boosters? Do those help at all? Any bad side affects?

Are you timing your car with a strobe timing light? Your damper may have slipped. This will throw off your timing. An easy check is to bring #1 piston all the way to the top and then see if the timing mark is on " 0 ". To do this, take out the spark plug on #1 cyl, look in the hole with a flashlight, and have a friend turn the engine slowly ( with either a socket wrench on the crankshaft nut, or by the fan ). You will see the piston as it nears the top. It will come up and start back down. At this point watch carefully and turn it back just until the piston is all the way at the top. This may take a few tries. Now your mark should be on " 0 ". If it is not, mark a line with a white paint pen, or other marker you can see, add the amount of advance your engine calls for and going counter clockwise, make a mark on the damper. This is what you will use to set your timing! Regardless of the marks, there are several reasons for pinging. I won't go into them all, but a lean condition will also cause this. If your timing marks were correct, try retarding the spark by 2° and see what happens. To do this turn the distributor clockwise. This should help!:)

octane boosters are real expensive other things have already been mentioned retard timing adjust carb I did these things to my Monarch and it still pinged I finally gave up and run premium in it the gas they sell now as premium wouldn't pass for regular when your car was built My monarch doesn't ping with premium gas but I only drive it on nice days so I don't really have to worry about cost
