has anyone added shims to the upper control arm to get more caster , is there room to do it , is it ok to do it , I pulled the strut arm as far forward as possible without the tire rubbing, also what size bolts are used , mine will end up being to short.

What degree of caster are you trying to achieve?

as much as I can get with a stock upper arm, drives good now, but I know it can be better.

Shims don't do much... Can get more by pulling control arms, removing press in mounting bolts, rotating shaft 1/2 turn to pull arm toward rear of car...

You might want to look into the "Shelby Drop" modification where you drop the top A-Frames mounting point 1 inch so your camber curves begin coming in sooner

how does rotating the shaft pull the arm back , ( never had the upper arm off yet so not sure how that works) just was looking to get more straight line stability on highway.

The shaft will rotate approx a turn in each direction(shaft bearing surface is spiraled to keep arm located)... Supposedly it's to be centered when installed but doesn't cause a problem with suspension if it isn't, of course you wouldn't want to move arm toward the front of vehicle...

Note lower shaft in pict isn't centered...

The Shelby drop mod lowers UCA and in original '65-'66 application moves arm rearward approx 1/8"... It's said there isn't enough space in the '67-'73 Stang to move arm so most just do the drop... BUT I'm fairly sure the Maverick which uses Fairlane/Falcon towers(larger than Stang) has enough room to make the 1/8' move...

Here's a link to recent thread about the Shelby Drop(plus lots of info on net)...

i did add shims and it helped me on my caster problem, so the lower arm wouldn't twist.

ive put shims in mine. if you want performance handling in these car you cant put too much caster in them. i would do the control arm shaft twist and the shim in the front bolt. then have an alignment shop match the two sides with the strut rod adjustment. make sure to have them only reduce the higher number side to match the lower number.
