I currently have the clear plastic tubing running to the front of the block, just behind the mechanical fuel pump mounting hole. I have been strongly encouraged to buy braided stainless line with AN fittings, and was recommended to buy a 36" piece. This will be too short to run to the gauge. Is there a closer hole for plugging this into in the block? Or will I need to buy 48" and run it back? Is it better to go over the valve covers or run it some other way?
Mine runs over the shock tower and goes in at or around the steering column, My gauge is under my radio, So i would say get the 48, you can always do something with the slack.
I've run mechanical oil pressure gauges in the past, but 'm well pleased with the operation of my Autometer Ultralite electrical gauge with it's corresponding sending unit. No tubing or hoses running from the engine to the dash. Just a small gage wire, which is very easy to conceal. JMHO
I have mine running along the top of the drivers side valve cover. You could always get the hos and fittings and make it whatever length you want. I believe I used the 48" kit from Autometer.
OK, if you run from the oil hole right behind the fuel mechanical pump to the hole in the lower dash where the radio was mounted, 48" is about 6" too short. I will run a steel elbow facing up, and run a 4" straight pipe up, then connect it there. I am pretty sure it will fit, but will be ugly as hell...
I recently replaced my electrical with a mechanical. Purchased the copper tubing from Jegs (which was plenty long enough) and connected to the brass fittings I had in place with the electrical gauge. Prior to hooking it up, I had an extra spark plug wire heat shield (blue in color) and ran the copper tubing through it, doesn't look too tacky. I place a photo but with the local blizzard, things are a liitle hectic.
I am replacing the plastic tubing for safety and track inspections, and have heard from many that the copper will not pass either. That is why I am going with the braided line. Will the 4" straight pipe pass inspection?
copper will pass inspection at any nhra track. i've used it for about 7 years now and never had a problem.
Does anyone know if there is another hole in the block toward the back of the engine, so I don't have to run the line all over the top? I just stuck mine in this hole because the stock dummy light was attached to this one.
1/8" copper tubing is cheap! just go get 6 or 8 feet and run your line with some slack so that vibration doesn't break it half way down a quarter mile race track and cause a fire that ruins your car.
Go through the fender well, around the door jamb, over the column, over the radio and into the gauge... J/K Steel braided all the way...
