Ok I built this motor and it is running awesome so I took it out and flogged it hard.Well the water pump gasket blew.It has done this twice in 2 days.I have the right pump the t stat is working .It keeps blowing the gasket between the pump and plate, the one that is already installed on the pump when you get it.I'm thinking it is the small chrome pulley on the pump and it is spining to fast building to much preasure. What do you guys think? I am gona go to a junkyard tomorrow and maybe get a crank and water pump pulley and try it.Then replace the gasket with a felpro and some hi tack sealer.I anyone else has any ideas let me know.

    Did you try RTV?

Depending on which RTV used, it takes a full 24 hours to fully cure (from my experience).

Hmmmm....Honestly my guess would be a small combustion leak into the coolant via head gasket or?

The area that gasket mates to is very uneven.

I would try another pump first and use a light coat of gasket maker on the gasket. I prefer the Brand name "The Right Stuff" by permatex. Best damn gasket maker period. OEMS use it instead of gaskets on alot of stuff these days.

Are you tightening the bolts in sequence and in an even manner?

i agree that the pulley is too small. i haven't had or seen this problem...has anyone else? how many take their pump apart when they get it and seal this gasket?

I measured the pulley on the car and it is 5 1/4 " and the crank pulley is 8 1/2". I went to a buddys house and looked at his old ford pickup his crank pulley is the same ,but his water pump pulley is 7",so I am going to get me a pulley from the u pull it yard tomorrow. I dont use RVT on waterpumps unless the factory used it.I use the gasket and Hi tack sealant .When I take the pump back and get my new one I will take it apart and put sealant on it. Thanks for all your ideas .I think I figured it out though.:hmmm:

I have never had any luck useing rtv or silicone of sorts on cooling components. It seems to react with coolant and turn mushy.I'm with jeepbus on this one, gasket spray and thats all. Also just for the heck of it did you check the pump to see if it is straight? It may have a little wow in it.Just a thought.

My first thought was an imperfection in the fitting of the pump in that location. I have never heard of this problem before. Keep us posted.

14 years ASE Master Tech. I have used sealant on every job I have ever done to avoid comebacks. The Right Stuff gasket maker is safe to use within 10 minutes of cure time. It won't get mushy. Ive lost count of all the water pumps/T-Stats I have done.

I can honestly say that i have never used "THE RIGHT STUFF".I am a AGCO master tech at a Massey Ferguson/CASE IH dealer, and only use what the parts department supplies. But i will definately put a request in to get some in to try.You arn't the only one who has said that it is a great product.

Well since we are throwing our qualifications out there......8 year ASE master Tech,Chrysler Gold Tech,NADC collage grad. Well that out of the way, after further inspection of the 2nd pump gasket that blew ,I took the backing plate off of the pump. The spot that blew was only covered by a 1/32 nd of an inch of the plate.Plus they did not use any spray or RVT.So I sprayed it and reinstalled it.Took it down the road and no leaks!! I am going to install a billet pulley set in the next week. The pump pulley on it is to small ,so I will just get the pulley set to make it look nice. Now the 2 pumps I bought were from different parts stores ,but are from the same manufacture.I all my years I have never removed the backing plate from a new pump I bought.I guess now I will check,it was a simple fix that caused a big headache.

Glad you got it figure out.......That goes to show, Parts are getting poorly made. Someone needs to invent a time machine so we can go back to the day of the Maverick and buy better parts.....Happy Mavricking
