My car has a 302 with manual steering and i have 205 75 14's in front and 215 75 14's rear.I think the fill the wheelwells pretty good and it steers fine. Also rides better with the taller sidewall tires.

Those are much too wide for a stock 4-1/2" wheel. The stock size was the equivalent of a 185/70-14 (D70-14 or C-78-14)...

Well you can run a 235/60-14 on a 7-inch wheel. You can actually run a 245, but I don't like how the sidewalls tuck inward...

4.5" rim is too narrow for a 205/70-14...

    72s used 6" wide rims...
At least the 5 lugs anyway.
I have 245/60/14s on my stock 6" rims.
Both my Mavs, and for MANY years.

I don't know what Mavs came with 4.5" rims, but I suspect they are either very early models or 170 powered cars.
Personally I have never owned a Maverick with anything less than 6" wide rims.

I generally use 215/70/14 up front because they appear the same height as the rears. Make a good match for the front.
The fronts in this pic are 205s... A little shorter than the 245s out back.

My '73 came with 4.5-inch wheels. I imagine that only Grabbers came with 6-inch, but I don't know that to be a fact...

I have found Mavericks with 4.5" and 6" wide wheels. 2-doors, 4-doors, Grabbers.....no real rhyme or reason to it.

    Weird.

    I have had 2 Sprints, 72 Grabber, and 75 2 door...
All had 2 doors, V8s, and 6" rims.

I knew some had 4.5", but I figured it was a 70 only thing, or small I6 thing...

Now I want some 4.5" 5 lug rims!
They would be good on front.
Nah, second thought, I want to get away from 14" rims...

    I have 4.5" wheels......even disc brake versions.
