While working on my brakes this afternoon I noticed the rear brake line junction box attaches to the rear axle, main line going in and two going out either side. On the top of the box was a rubber hose that went up into the frame, it was broken off right above the box. I don't have my Chilton's manual yet (Its being mailed to me), and It has been too many years since I worked on a Maverick. What is the part and what does it do. Thanks in advance Glen
It is a vent for the rear axle. Not sure what it does and why it is there....but I would replace the hose otherwise dirt could get inside your axle housing....and that can't be good.
Heat expands things, namely the oil and air inside the rear end. When it gets hot, it builds up pressure that has to go somewhere, either out the vent, or the next weakest spot, the axle seals. I have seen many axle seals blowed by a stopped up vent.
Yep, the hose runs into the framerail to keep dirt and water from getting into the axle. My Jeeps front axle vent runs to the top of the radiator core support, and the rear to the top of the rear body tub, but they thought it might see alot more water than a maverick will.
Good idea, EVERYBODY, to unscrew the axle vent an check it will pass air and not plug! Seen a lot of them over the years plug up with dirt , bugs and whatever! Especially if you have a leaking axle seal.
