the only thing I will add to this thread is that flowmasters, whether they're 40, 50, 70, super 40s, one chamber, whatever.....they all sound the same and they have sounded the same for the last 15 years. Its hard to be the sound of a properly set up system with a pair of turbo mufflers...

Oh and by the way flowmasters arent' going to give you any more power than anyone elses stuff either unless the whole system works together in such a way that the mufflers will actually help evacuate the pipes. Not likely unless you're into engineering and physics. I'm not into either one. BTW, flowmasters are worthless on a turbo car...expect a huge loss in performance. I ran a pair of 3.5" in/out single chamber flows on my Maverick a few years ago....they weren't supposed to cause any power loss but still quiet down the exhaust. They did quiet it down, but I also lose .4 in the 1/8 mile and 3 mph AVERAGE. About a half second at the worst. One of the u-tabs broke one race day so I pulled them both off and got my half second back. They actually sounded pretty decent except the tin can sound but they sure stopped the exhaust up. So now I have NO mufflers. And yes I am suffering from hearing damage but it's sure nice to drown out the sound of the car in the other lane.

They were $100 each installed. They don't sound any better or worse, but I think they resonate less than the FMs...

That was your first mistake. People don't seem to realize that too large of pipe actually causes a loss in power.

I love the sound of turbo mufflers, but they do not flow as well as Flowmasters, and not all turbo mufflers are created equal either. Just because it's called a "turbo", does not mean it will flow well.

I loved the tone of my turbos, but I wanted more volume, so I got the V-force (40-Series clones)...

    OK, more specific info needed...

Inlet and outlet size (since you guys brought it up)...if I am running 2-1/2" pipe, should it be 2-1/2" (I know, sounds like a dumb question, but I want to be 100% sure before I buy the mufflers... )

I was thinking of the inlet being in the center, outlet being on the outer side toward the wheels, with the downturn there before the axle. Is there any benefit to any other setup, or going with a center inlet/center outlet? Or should I offset the outlet toward the center of the car to keep exhaust gasses and water vapor away from the tires?

H-pipe, X-pipe, or what kind of crossover, and where should it be located?

Any other hints for putting this together so that it can be easily removed and reinstalled while I work on the car?

Should I use clamps on the hangers, or weld the hangers on and do a bolt/bodypanel/nut then hanger then nut setup so I can drop the hangers with the exhaust and the mounting bolt stays on the car?

Just trying to get my shopping list created and don't want to leave anything out...I really need this installed before the end of july for inspection...

Again, Thank you all very much for all the great information(y)

That's exactly what I meant. And how are they too big when the motor's making a little under 600 HP?

How? It's physics. The new Shelby Mustang GT-500 makes 500hp at the rear wheels, and it doesn't have any 3+ inch pipes on it.

I suppose you should have used a 6-inch pipe instead....

Yes, use the same size inlet/outlet that your pipes will be.

Also, you want a side inlet, center outlet. This works well on Mavericks.

I would run them over the axle and exit outside the leafsprings next to the rear quarter panels behind the rear wheels. There's more room there for 2-1/2" pipe. Some guys like them coming straight out the back, but I don't like them that low, and I like turn-downs....

Yeah, I looked at some pics of other cars and they are entering on the inside of the muffler on an offset, then exiting the center...

I won't go anything bigger than 2.5". 3" looks better, and probably sounds better, but I will never run anything over 400HP (IF that!) through them and I am not a professional racer, so 2.5 should be plenty, if not a little too big for me.

Exhaust engineering is more about accustics than it is about flow.
In the exhaust pulse there is a sound wave that bounces back and forth. If that sound pulse meets a restriction or expansion it is bounced back toward the port. If it hits the port at the right time it can assist in the evacuation process. If it hits at the wrong time it can do the opposite.
Muffler placement, the size and length of pipe beyond it and even the shape of the pipe can add or subtract HP from your engine. A smaller pipe (within limits) speeds up the pulse and a larger pipe (again within limits slows the pulse. Too far in either direction can completely eliminate any benefit from the scavanging effects and actually cause an exhaust system to lose hp that would otherwise be available.

a cross pipe helps for a more even evacuation of exhaust, and it helps the engine to exhale more efficiently

i was going to add one to my car, but the guy wanted another 250 bucks.. and i didnt have it
