My Exhaust guy is about 3 miles away. I called him today and he remembered doing my Grabber dual exhaust 4 years ago. I told him I want to convert to factory manifolds and asked if he had a flat bed to bring my car down to his shop after I install the manifolds. He said to just drive it with just the manifolds on and it won't hurt anything. I thinking the heat will peel the paint off my firewall! What do you thing ... drive 3 miles or flatbed it?
As long as you have the manifolds in place, it is safe for the engine... About the paint on your firewall... I have never had a firewall nice as your's to worry about it! I would say drive it... Richen it up a bit, don't take the scenic route, shut it down and coast into the parking lot so it is short a run as possible.
I drove my 74 about the same distance with open headers, the floor got pretty hot, and it was noware as nice as your car is, I wouldn't risk it. Maybe get him to bend up some down pipes just to get it there, and have them exit straight down??
I have driven one about 13 miles to the exhaust shop before. It did burn the paint off....but I was going at highway speeds. If you could drive nice and slow...you might be O.K. I would at least hook up a little pipe to each one and point it down toward the ground away from the firewall.
I don't think it'd be a major problem. Three miles is about a 5-7 minute drive. Maybe try just laying off the gas and letting it glide if you can? Adding the little bit of downpipe is also a good idea, methinks.
Do you have an old exhaust Y-pipe? One of your GA gang might have one laying around. You could put that on there... Or even if you could salvage the first 12" of each side would help IMO. Edit: Heck if you just need a short length of pipe on each side, it seems to me that you could use the down pipe off any 302 vehicle with the same exhaust manifold hook ups.
If I had an old Y pipe that would be perfect ... don't have one though .. I'll put a wanted on the board ... good idea ... probably cheaper than spending the money on a flatbed ... I think it would need to be a Maverick y-pipe to make sure it clears the clutch linkage .
you probably dont want all that exhaust building up under the hood and probably in the car too. if you got some pipe to bolt up you should be good. then again how much would the tow be? $50? might be worth it just so you dont have any extra headache. goodluck
