I am about ready to go buy a 74-78 maverick rear end for my 63 comet project and want to make sure I get what I want. Do any of you guys know the numbers for those years. I am looking for a 5 lug.

    Thanks,
    Joe

Mavericks came with 2.79 or 3.00 open 8" rears, except the 69 1/2 and a few 70's that have a 7.5 rear, which is always 4 lug. 8" rears were made in both 4 and 5 lug.

When looking at this rear end how can I decode the cast number to make sure I am getting a 74-78 as I have been told this will be a direct bolt in with my 63 comet.
    Thanks,
    Joe

Someone probably told you to look for the 74-77 rear because they were all 5 lug at that point.
Before 73 or 74, they were either 4 or 5 lugs depending on drivetrain. However, they will bolt in anywhere the later rears will bolt in. They were all the same when it comes to mounts and dimensions.

As for numbers... I don't know what they would be.

You would need to know exactly what measurements you need, and measure the rear in question and see how it stacks up.

If you don't know anything about the part you are buying, I would suggest you find a rear that is still in the car and watch it get pulled out.
That way you know what you are getting.

i don't think the number will help you very much. i believe the rear ends have tags on one of the bolts. most of them are probably missing. i would just make sure it comes out of a maverick or comet. as long as it's a 5 bolt it should fit.
