Since someone slapped Shelby valve covers in my Comet... this got me thinkin'... apparently the Europa cars were "licensed" by Shelby. Dunno if that means anything besides good P.R. and markup for a dealership... although a hi-po 289 with GT40 heads sounds appealing.

Anyone got info, pics, or ideas as to what Shelby might have done with these cars? And no, I'm not trying to regurgitate the Shelby-Maverick thread... this is about Comets.

    This link is kinda interesting...

Yes, that would be cool. The MCCI obtained permission a couple of years ago to
post those pics in the Shorthorns MCCI Newsletter. I tried to get more details on
what modifications were done to the car. No other info was available. It was a
forgone conclusion that it was likely a converted 4 spd. car. Note in the pictures,
there is no fender mounted antenna-radio delete style.

    Those are stock Comet taillights.

I owned a Maverick once that did not have an antenna on it. Out of all the Mavericks and Comets I have owned.....that was the ONLY one I have ever had that did not have an antenna on it...EVER. Kind of rare I would say.

My '75 4-door came without a radio or antenna. The only option ordered on my car was a 302!

Switch your Maverick tail panel for a Comet one. It will take some welding but it's a direct swap.

Somebody did it without swapping the tail panel. There was a pic here somewhere.

Are those REALLY Comet taillights?.... pffft

Ha Ha... I'm not sure who'se being a smartass here... next up will be someone trying to jamb the Cyclone 3 part lights into the back of a little Comet (that's probably been attempted before).

As for the "GT250"... I've never seen a factory black Maverick or Comet - much less a black car with black stripes... that was an interesting design idea which is what appealed to me... very subtle. I was wondering what Shelby would have done to a Comet if there was an agreement to build and sell them in North America.

My 72 Comet has no antennae as it also had no radio (and no wiring for a radio). I took someone's advice and strapped a rubber mast under the dash and it works ok... so I will not drill the fender to mount it.

The article also said the car was good for 135MPH... guy had guts to drive it flat out when a tire went. Must have also had a different speedo, and thanks for pointing out that it was a 4 speed.

Just shows you what promise these cars had in those days but U.S. marketing refused to sell them with nothing more than hood scoops and lotsa decals. Mavericks and Comets could have been a last hurrah for the muscle car era if they (had 4 barrels and 4 speeds) out-performed Mustangs and the like in the mid 70's.... but then that's OUR LITTLE SECRET since - if it had been otherwise, they would not be as cheap and accessible to us as a collector hobby as they are today.

The pictures I seen of the green "Shelby Maverick" amost looks like a Comet to me, I think the Grabber rear spoiler with a slightly taller factory Gt scoop, remove the hood emblem and put a cobra emblem in the grill right below it, replace the turn signals with small driving lights and relocate turn signals to bottom like early grabber, chrome Gt magnem wheels, paint it red or blue with twin white shelby stripes over whole car but end them on the hood were the gt stripe ended ! Hisss...

whisky: black was not an uncommon color for a Comets in 71-72. I bought a new 71 GT black with silver stripes. Those are Comet tailights. When I did my Comet GT clone I painted it Black and was going to add the black stripes but went with silver instead.
