I have the address and contact info. I am heading over there in about an hour to look at it. I did forget my camera however.... Anything specific I should be looking for that would make this a non-deal short of overall condition?
So.... My nephew was wrong on every point except the make and model of the car. Now the real story: It was a 72 (I think) red Mercury Comet GT. The body is all original with the exception of the hood (which is tan) and was transplanted from a non-GT car (a tan one) with the red GT scoop transplanted on it. There is rust through at the bottom of both doors and behind the rear wheels. Oddly enough, there doesn't appear to be any problem with the rocker panels. There is surface rust on the chrome. The interior is moldy but fairly un-molested. The car had 96999 on the odometer. I do not know the condition of the motor other than to say I could not rotate it by hand. It is too ambitious of a project for me. If someone else is interested, I will pass on the info....
They are right. Those are common conditions on these cars. Your noticing that the rocker panels were not rusted-they were galvanized from the factory prior to paint, so you don't commonly see issues on them unless the car is an absolute rust bucket. This sounds restorable especially considering the price. If not interested, let someone else know about it. I'm not in the market, but I would like to see pics. Seth
Don't get me wrong. I know it is a very restorable car and a decent price to boot. The problem is my current number of unfinished projects dictate that it would be no better off in my hands than rusting where it is. The car is located in St.Louis. If anyone here is serious about grabbing this, send me a Private Message and I will give you all the info you need to pick this up. I will try and post pictures of it when I can but don't wait on those if you are interested. Two other details: The windshield was broken. The sticker on the windshield indicates it was last registered in 1980.
Looks like a buddy of mine is going to grab this. He has a 66 Mustang that he built for his daughter to drag race last year (I think she won some trophy's) that he is going to junk out and move the parts to the Comet...
Well i am the buddy Mongo was talking about. I was already a member on this board and saw the post. My first question is...will my Ford 9" that is under my 1966 Mustang fit under the Comet? Next, will my all brand new stainless brake lines I installed in the 1966 Mustang fit this Comet? I am under the impression that the 70's Mavericks and Comets were sitting on the 1965/66 Mustang chassis's? I bought a fred flintstone Mustang that turned out to need EVERY single body panel, but I agreed to build a drag race car for my teen daughter. So with a little effort we made the car look passable. She did well in the bracket, finishing 9 out of 30 I think (me never building a race car, her never racing). Total family affair. But we spent a ton of money making the Mustang SAFE, and solid, however our budget ran out before the bodywork. The car still looked great from a few feet away...long story. you can check our high school racing website www.swartsmotorsports.com
I am posting pictures to Photobucket as I type. That site is running slow, but I have 41 pictures of this car to post. I think I would be the dumbest person alive to pass this car up!
Here is the link to the photobucket. Tell me if I did not load it correctly. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v709/nstraws/1973 Comet GT/ THere are 41 pictures. THe car is a ctually a 1973. There is one split in the driver seat, but all the interior is there, and a good headliner. Windshield is broke (Mongo stated). The air cleaner is in the trunk. Floors are solid, and I could not get into the trunk while there. It was getting dark, so you will see diminishing light photos. I forgot to check the battery fender apron for rust, but the front rails seemed good. I was there less than 1.5 hours ago, so I am rushing to get these out for your disection! So I was looking forward to the smaller bumper setup. I will buy, because the guy selling for his elderly neighbor said that a guy offered to buy it to make a demolition car out of it. I took a defensive stance, that this is too good to pass and not put on the street.
