I can not seem for the life of me to get the drivers side header around the gear box. Has anyone else has this problem? Any tricks to it?

Do you mean that you can't get it past the steering box? Have you tried picking the motor up a few inches?

I don't have Hookers ... my passenger side header drops right in, but I had to fight a bit with the drivers side with mine.

I have "the unknown-brand used 1968 Cougar 302 headers from a friend that we chopped an inch out of each pipe to fit the 351W squeezed into my Comet" kind.... :rofl2:. He thinks that they might have been Blackjacks originally, but we couldn't find any markings.

The motor has to come up about four inches to get the driver's side header in, and the steering arm has squished one tube. It is tight in there.

Raise the engine a few inches and it should slide right in.

it MIGHT go in. i tried a set for a '67 Stang (same as cougar) but the driver's side would not go in no matter what you did. had to end up getting Maverick headers. your best bet is to undo the drive side motor mount bolts and jack the engine up 2-4 inches for some extra room. if it doesnt work then, it's not gonna work. good luck

My BlackJunks went in by raising the motor about 4". It does just touch the box.

You may not get them in no matter what you do if there 302 headers and you have a 351w.:)

i had it in but then had to remove it because the polyurathane motor mounts would not reach the botl holes. hopefully over the winter they streched or something. I need a kick down cable and throttel cable preferable new. would anyone know where i might find these?

If you have the 6901's you need to do the drivers side first if I remember. Disconnect the motor mount and raise the engine a couple of inches. Install the header (it's still a header so you'll have to fight with it) then drop it back down. Passenger side should go right in.
That was my experience. If the hooker number you have is not 6901 you have the wrong headers.

I had to lift the engine for both sides, but WAY up for the driver.

Went in from the top on one side, and from underneath on the other, so have the frame WAY up off the ground before you start.

I had to raise the driver's side a few inches to get the header approx. where it should be, then lower the motor part way down to get the header where it resides and then lower it all into place. Do you have a P/S drop bracket installed? That will make a difference too

The engine is raised for the instalation, not as a result of a finished install.
