The 302 HO is almost ready to go in. Still need to make one good Holley ouf of three 4160s I picked up for a total of $30. Never rebuilt a Holley before but I have the "How To" book. Also need to go thru the C4 -- leaking like mad -- before engine can go in. That too will be a first for me but I also have the Haynes Ford Auto Trans book that PaulS recommended (if I remember right(. Valve covers were contributed by a friend. They had been sitting in a field for a few years and were pretty rough. I intended to polish them but like Plan B better. Certainly less work! Doug Thorley headers. (Big splurge!!) Got the Edelbrock Performer intake from a member of the Forum. Glad the engine is close. NC weather is getting better for paint so its time to get back at the paint and body work.
Holleys are fairly simple. Use a holley kit. Watch the power valve. They are numbered for opening vacuum. Shouldnt be an issue unless you have a cam that gives you low engine vacuum at idle. Read up on it and pick a valve that matches your set up as a starting point. I think they range from around 10.5 down to 1 inch of vacuum. So if a car had 9 inches vacuum at idle and a 10.5 power valve it would be open at idle. Get it?? Think mine is a 7.5. These carbs are very tuneable if you get into it. High flow, standard flow valves, single and dual stage valves. Dont worry about it though you wont notice a difference a few points up or down. Just remember the higher the number the sooner you get that extra fuel of the power circuit. Have fun.
Got it. The power valve opens on low vacuum. Didn't know any of that. Maybe you could suggest a starting point for jets, metering rods and power valve. Or tell me how to guess. I assume I need to choose all of those appropriate to my setup, right? Don't know what any of the Holleys were on before I got them, so no telling what I'll find in them. I have an '88 roller motor with '86 nearly flat top, zero compression height pistons and E7 heads, shaved .005" with mild porting. I'm expecting around 9.2:1 compression and close to factory spec vacuum. Not sure of cam but I'll assume its a stock '86 or '88. Edelbrock 289 Performer intake. C4 with stock converter. 3:00 rear, 24"-25" tires. Looking for a good-running street engine with an occasional trip to the strip just to see what it does. Will definitely get the Holley brand kit. Won't be getting at the carb for a while -- got to take advantage of the good Fall painting weather. Appreciate any suggestions. Jim
if you take the list number off the air horn of the carb you can find someone with a holley catalog. they can tell you the jets and power vavle that the carb origanly came with. i loaned my catalog to mo. so i can look it up for you right now. holleys dont have rods. start with the stock setings. you can tune by reading the plugs or geting it dyno tuned or useing a wide band o2 sensor.
Coming along nicely...I like the blue valve covers.Holleys are simple once you understand em.If you allready have the holley tuning book read it.If not the title is: How to tune holley carburetors.I forget the author/s though. Its a good book.Loaned mine to someone years ago.Havent seen it since Have fun!!
Actually I think thats the book I had.You shouldnt need another. I think the covers will look good on the Sprint for sure
Motor looks nice. Are those headers made for a Fox Mustang?(looks like it) If so ...I hate to tell you this but They Won`t work in a Maverick.
I got ya beat. I loaned out my Holley book along with my box of Holley goodies. Tons of gaskets, valves, jets, shooters springs,cams.etc. Never did get it back. He moved and havent seen him in 15 years. Jerk.
Oh yeah!... well...well...yeah, you got me beat on that one Darren .Lost my copy of the anarchist cook book like that too.
Is the 4160 600cfm? I cant remember. If so, the jetting you should start with is 64-65 primary jets with a around a 28 discharge nozzle. If it is 650cfm start with 68-69 jets. What elevation are you at?
