Hey I was wondering if there was anyone on here that knew much about the Toyota 2JZ GTE engines that came in Supra's and what not. I am making my comet into a daily driver so I want a fuel injected engine. I'm sorta in between the Toyota engine and a 1996 Explorer 5.0L. I have seen the Maverick with the Toyota engine already and I relize most of you guys won't be happy about this. I have been scrambling to get answers from the Toyota guys but I can't and I need to know soon because I've got lines on good deals on both engines in my area. The biggest thing I'd like to know is if a 1JZ R154 transmission will bolt up behind my engine (the one I'm getting comes with an auto trans). Do I need to change the ECU etc. If someone could point me somewhere to find the answers it would be greatly appreciated.
your questions that are specificly about the toyota motor and trans wont get answered here. cost wise, the 5.0 will be cheaper to put in because it will just bolt in. with the toy. motor you will have alot more work and expence just to fit it in.
I'm not worried about the fab stuff, that stuff is easy for me and the toyota engine comes with turbos, ECU, harness, transmission, mounts (which would obviously have to be modified), and driveshaft stub for $2100 and I could probably get it for as low as $1500. The explorer engine is $800 plus I would have to get a t-5 and clutch and ecu and harness. So price should be about the same. Toyota will just be alot more work.
im not sure but i belive that with the toyota you will need to goto an aftermarket front suspension that eliminates the shock towers. that will tack on another 1500 or so bucks.
Look Here: http://www.bigwigracecars.com/spectre/maverick.htm The builder of this car use to post here, but now with the project done, I'd bet he's moved on.
heck if your going to consider toyotas, how does an I force V8 compare in size and mounting to a 302? is it closer to a modular ford? personally i'm a ford in ford, toyota in toyota, chevy in chevy kinda guy
I'm usually like that too but with this engine I can get at least 5 more MPG probably more plus better handling and all for probably the same price. I'll probably just end up going with the 5.0 because it will be much easier to work on and fix if it breaks down. This is the first time I've built a daily driver project so I am going outside the norm and considering things like weight and MPG, if the 200 six in my car could make 320 horsepower reliably and get 30+ MPG I would leave it in there in a heartbeat. It hasn't ran in 10 years but I got it going the other day and once all the mouse nests got blown out the exhaust it started running real awesome and smooth I couldnt believe it.
consider leaving it or going with the 250 I-6. check out fordsix.com some claim to get into the mid 20s for MPG and they can be set up to accelerate.....
You definetly can't beat a V8 for sound, maybe I should throw a Jaguar or BMW V12 in it. Anyone know of a V12 Maverick/Comet yet? I'll have to get out the big hammer to get that one to fit haha. I just feel like this car needs something different. Anyone got one of those new 365 hp Taurus/Flex engines for sale?
Personally, if I were worried about fuel economy I would buy a newer economy car for the day to day driving and build the Comet with a 302 for a weekend fun car. -Scott H.
As for the Toyota, I don't think that they removed the shock towers for clearance as a straight 4 cylinder is narrower than the V8. Now they may have changed it because of the crossmember, but I couldn't tell you for sure. I would think (and this is a total guess on my part) it would be less expensive to have a custom oil pan made than to put in an MII front suspension. You can basically shoe horn any engine in, it's just a matter of thinking outside the box.
I already have a weekend car its a 1967 Cougar with a 460, I even condsidered it as a daily driver but it's too likely that some moron will run into it. I'm not terribly worried about fuel economy but I would just prefer that it got 20+ otherwise I would just keep driving my truck which gets like 14MPG.
the the toy motor being talked about here is i6, the motor it self is with out a doubt narrower than a v8. but this motor has 2 turbos haing off the side of it. those would interfear with the shock towers.
I would go ford in ford also. But if you want power and mpg you should consider a turbo kit for the 5.0 and get much better mileage and a whole lot more power.
