Hi, I'm thinking about buying a maverick/comet for my son for his first car. I was wondering if anybody has done a 6 cylinder eninge swap (straight or v) to get a modern engine with fuel injection. I live in Chicago, and I remember flooding my car many times in the winter time, which is what I'm trying to avoid for my son. I'm staying away from a v8 for obvious reasons. Thanks, Dan
Hi Dan, Welcome! There is someone here working on a 3.8L V6 at the moment I believe. There are also a few here working on the modern version of the Ford 2300 with EFI and available Turbo on some 80s Fox bodies. I believe one Turbo Bird powered Maverick is even for sale here at the moment. As far as I6s go, there are very few options here in the US. Austrailia Ford went much further with those than we did here in the US. You can get fancy I6 stuff, but it is NOT cheap as it has to be shipped around the world, and the stuff was'nt made to fit either Mavericks or left hand drive cars. Therefore there is a great deal of cost and fabrication to go the I6 route. I think the 2300 route is really cool and new to our cars, especially the turbo version.
There is nothing bolt in, and the issue with most modern V6's is they have a rear sump oil pan, and oil pump design that makes it nearly impossible to swap them into a Maverick without major modifications to the car itself. Your best bet would probably be to pick up a 5.0 and all the fuel injection stuff with it out of a late 80's panther platform car (Town Car/Grand Marquis/Crown Vic). That's only about 150 horsepower. Those cars in good running condition can generally be had very cheap.
Go With A Low Power 302 V-8 Hi, I can not agree with the previous comment more. The 3.8 Ford V-6 is not an easy drop in swap. You will need to fabricate motor mounts and change the oil pan, and sump pump to a custom arrangement. I have been involved with such a swap to meet certain drag racing class requirements. The 302 swap is a total no brainer with all the parts readily available. A used low power throttle body injected 302 engine complete with all the accessories should be easy to find and relatively inexpensive. David
