dont have a diagram but its a simple circut. start at the lights them self. that will give you the color of the wire you need to follow. first make sure that the bulbs are still good. next use a test light to see if you have power going to the sockets when the car is in reverse with the key on engine off. if you dont have power you should check the fuses now. if they are good goto the base of the steering column at the fire wall on the inside of the car. there is a switch on top of it. thats the nutrual saftey / reverse swith. check to see if its geting power. if its has power going to it try jumping the power wire driectly to the wire that matches the color of the wire going to the back up light socket. warning if you put power to the wrong wire the motor will crank, and if it cranks while you have it in reverse the car will move. the power for the reverse switch comes from the ignition switch and the last reminging thing is the ground for the lights them self in the back.

The power for the reverse lights come from the same circuit as the light for the radio, if you've modified any of that wiring, it would be the place to start. IS your car, floor or column shift?

Just to throw in my two cents, that wire is pink.

I had this problem too, it ended up being the switch at the base of the column. If yours is bad, get it out and look at it, especially the pigtail, so you can match it up before you go searching for a new one. There are at least three variations of this switch for Mav/Comets.

at what point is it cut at. i would put a test light on it and see if it has power with the key on and then with the shifter in reverse. if not the put power to it and see if the lights turn on. if they do then you need to locate the nutrual safty switch. i think with the floor shifted cars the switch is on the trans. where the shift lever goes through the case there should be a half circle thing with 4 wires coming out of it. two will be for the netrual safty switch and two will be for the back up switch.

OK! The wire i THOUGHT was pink is red... I THINK i found the original stereo wires, 2 are WHITE w/ violet stripes (1) is hot when the key is on(in park or reverse), the other isnt... the other wire is BLUE w/ red stripe which is NOT hot. I DONT see a pink wire... MAYEB these ARNT the stereo wires. i cant find a wireing diagram even in my mustang books.

My mistake. According to the diagram, the wire I said was pink is actually black with a pink stripe.

OK! I took my COW into the shop for some minor work and they found that the reverse light switch IS bad. I havent seen what mine looks like but i saw the connector.. From what ive seen i think i need a part #sw1148 Motorcraft, But that comes up as a Nertural safety swicth, and doesnt say ANYTHING about reverse.. I have a floor auto shifter, V8. 1972.. does anyone know the part # for the reverse switch???

    thanks
