I'm getting the tires mounted on my aluminum rims this weekend. I bought all new SS screws for the center caps. As far as the screws are concerned (and since there is the dissimilar metals thing going on) what would you suggest to put on the threads: ~ Lock-tight or ~ Anti-seize
Anti-sieze for sure. Use lock-tite and you can cause problems for your tire guy next time you need new tires.
Never used either, and never had a problem. But, if I were to use one it definately would be anti-seize
Wow I guess that makes it unanimous. That may be the first time I have actually seen that on here. NO doubt somebody will post after this and screw it up. LOL
Hey man, you spilled something! I swear, I can't take you anywhere! Definitely anti-seize. Of course, after that, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to just give them a check once in a while to make sure they haven't loosened up, since they should not be welding themselves to the rims.
My mech job is located just about as far left and down as you can go on the map of the US. The ocean is right there, a lot of rust. A little dab will do ya not too much. I call it Anti Rust.
Well that's what I used, permatex anti-seize. I have a large jar of that stuff and I use it on "everything" lol. I figured that would be the best thing, but since this was aluminum vs. stainless steel, I wondered if the lock-tight would have more of a barrier to keep the materials separate. Anyway, thanks for the advice, anti-seize was the clear winner! Art PS, boy that stuff is messy, I get it all over.... lol
I usually apply it with a small art brush (i.e. one of my kids' retired paintbrushes. honest, it was retired!) and spread it with my finger. Well it sounded good before I added that. I guess you're right, it's even messy that way.
