same casting number does not mean same weight. they grind on the bottom of the rods to remove weight to match them.
i go with a set of the 4 valve relief style newer ones, they have higher silicone content and less skirt. more comp ratio too.

the last thing you need to consider with this build is push rods. once you get into aftermarket cams you may have to change push rod length to achieve correct valvetrain geometry. that is one area of engine assembley that lots of people overlook when they are planing there budget on the cost of a motor.
But what stock flat top pistons ? They're not all the same. Pin height varies from 1.585 to 1.620. As for the rods, use the ones from the crank you're using. The piston replacement isn't really a big issue. Will it be perfectly balanced ? No. Will it run OK ? Yes, more than likely. No engine is perfectly balanced for all rpms, when one is balanced, it's balanced for a targeted rpm range. The only domed 302 stock pistons were the 69-70 Boss 302 pistons.
what are you going for anyway. if you have a 302 with e7's in your mav I don't see how this would run any better
the stock 89 mustang pistons are forged pistons that are considered flattop pistons. they were some of the strongest pistons ford used in the 5.0 motor. if you all 8 pistons they would the ones to use. if they are dished then chances are they are not 89 mustang pistons.

Hey that's my old engine pistons are the stock 75, that are dished.... They got really crappy compression, i have the dish spec's somewhere. But with my 53cc 289 heads they got 8.4:1
Here is a 83 5.0 Aluminum 4 bbl intake that I started polishing out. Waffling was the first to go, I wanted to see how it took to the buffs and rouge. It will get finished to some degree and then off to ebay. I'm planning on using a airgap for my build. But yes this is an excellent low budget choice. Oh btw mirror finish is possible with the series aluminum they used. I found it fairly tempered and at one point not shown in picture because I re-sanded the area. It's backburnered for now...
