Hey guys, I'm looking for a way to have an electrical switch on my clutch pedal for a sensor for my MSD. Has anyone found an easy way to do this?
Hello, can you tell us what you are trying to trigger? If you need a simple hook up I had good luck with a line lock switch mounted on the stick. It very hard to see at night when some one is looking your car over. I'm not saying your going to street race your car, but if your at a car show at night well you can mount it so it hard see. You might be able to use a turbo 400 elect. kick down switch, if I remember right they were mounted under the gas pedal.
on mo's car we put a micro switch on his pedal to work as clutch safty switch. now he uses a cnc assembly so how its mounted doesnt apply to a stock pedal. you should be able to put a micro switch on a bracket located to triger at the point that you want it to.
Needs to lockout the starter unless the clutch pedal is all the way down. I have that on my car, but the switch is broken and I haven't looked for a replacement. If I find one, I'll post it up.
I always thought that was a useless feature. It's better for your engine if you start the car in neutral rather than with the clutch pedal pressed in, a cold main thrust bearing doesn't like the crank pressing against it.
Starting it in neutral also allows the main transmission shaft to spin while the car is warming up. Gets the trans gear oil warmed up too.
i would prefer to have the throw out bearing wear out early (wich i doubt) than the car be able to acidently start and lurch forward in gear. the throw out bearing is packed with grease the same way wheel bearings are. under this line of thought you should preheat your wheel bearings. the throwout bearing has to start out cold its first engagement anyways. beter at slower cranking rpms than faster reved up to move rpms. i agree that starting in nutrual is best also.
Don't think he was talking about the throwout barring. He is talking about the load that the clutch engagement puts on the thrust barring on the crank shaft that controls end play of the crank. Starting it dry with a load on the thrust barring will cause premature failure. That is what he is talking about I believe.
ah ok. theres merit to that. i did miss read that. sence every stick car from the 80s on up that i have driven (lots being a mechanic) require you to push the clutch pedal to start, and those motors last over 200,000 miles on average says that its not a significant wear issue. so considering that ill opt for the safty that a clutch saftey switch gives you.
I've been driving stick cars for 40 years without a clutch "safety switch" and never had an incident. If a person doesn't know enough to have a manual trans car out of gear to start it, maybe they shouldn't get behind the wheel of a stick car.
On big trucks with Jake Brakes, they use a micro switch with a long wire spring that hits the pedal arm to disengage the Jake when you use the clutch to shift. Might check with a large truck parts dealer, like International or Freightliner for something that will work...
I'm actually using it to trigger the Digital 7+. The box uses it to determine which gear I am in and adjusts the timing accordingly. Also in this application it is wired to a relay and releases my line lock when I drop the clutch. This box is so danged smart it makes me feel useless as a driver! LOL I'm kind of looking for how other guys have done this (pictures would be great!).
Hey Tony this is what I did for my two step on my car works great! Man you gotta post some pictures in your gallery of this KILLER your building and give the rest of us some eye candy Brian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
