OK, here's the deal. I recently acquired a Lincoln Versailles nine inch rear end, to put in my '75 with the 420 c.i., with the Brodix Keith Craft heads. I know that the L.V. nine inch has 28 spline axles and an open carrier. I also know that the 31 spline axles are superior in strength. Do you think that the 28 spline axles would hold up under dragstrip use with slicks? I could put a 28 spline Detroit locker and gears in it, or; I could put a 31 spline Detroit locker and gears and AXLES in the rear end. It all boils down to money. The extra cost of the axles. My head tells me to go the 31 spline route at extra cost. I guess my question is: Are any of you running 500-550 h.p. with slicks, on 28 spline axles? Or should I just go ahead and buy a set of Jegs, Moser, Strange etc. 31 spline axles? Thank you for taking the time to read my thread.
My thought,,, your pushing the 31 splines with what your doing,,, again, MY THOUGHTS! If you buy anything, I would go at least 33 spline but may just jump 35 spline and be done. Guys have made 31 work, 28 has even worked for some, I just don't want to lose my entire drive-line on a chance of maybes here. AGAIN just my 40% of a nickel,,,
I've benn running Moser 33 splines in a my car for almost 10 years. I run high 11's with it. I was going to go with the 31 spline axles but when I bought them they didn't offer a warranty on the 31's and did offer a 10 year warranty on the 33's and bigger and for the same price. I have heard that since then they started offering warranties on all there axles.
Spend the $$ and get 35 spline axles...You really dont want the axles coming apart on a 500+HP set up under load on a run down the strip...
X2 I would think on a dead hook, that engine is fully capable of wringing the 28 spline axles out of the case. 31 spline is better, but marginal. That's a beast of an engine. Do you have any torque numbers from dyno results?
stroker, are you running a trans brake or just a higher stall converter? If you have the money then always get the better product, in this case the higher spline axles, upgraded housing, etc. If you're on a "dime budget" i can tell you that im running a 9" 28spline rear with detroit locker and a 3000 stall now and slicks at track. no problems yet. YET... :16suspect but i can tell you that it would absolutely break if i launched at 4k rpms on a trans brake and hooked. Ill replace mine when / if it does break.
I am running a standard full manual forward valvebody, with no transbrake, with 3500 stall. Although, I haven't decided on 389:1 or 411:1 ratio yet. I have made my mind up to go at least, with Strange ST 31 spline. Thanks for your reply.
the strange st axles are good. much beter than moser's. if you were to step up to 35 spline you will need to upgrade to a new case they require a biger 3.25 bore carrier bearing. you should upgrade to the daytona pinionsupport also.
I don't have the wallet to go that route. I hope the Strange ST series 31 spline will do the trick. The ST series is a grade above their standard SS axle. Either that, or wait a while to put it all together. What do yo think?
Here is a pic of my Moser 28 spline and I run drag radials. This was with 560 at the tires. I upgraded to 35 spline. Good luck!
i know the cost of jumping to 35 spline is big. also you can only get a locker or spool for 35 spline. also the detroit locker for 35 spline is not very stong. they just bore out the 31 spline to 35 spline. this makes the journals very thin and they are easy to brake. the lenco locker is the only one that you should run with 35 spline and its twice as expensive. i would put the money your spending right now on the st axles, a track lock, detroit locker, or auburn pro. a daytona pinion support and a billet yoke. have the third member built using a solid pinion spacer not a crush sleeve. as long as you arent useing a trans brake you should not brake this set up.
The problems I have seen at the track are if you are running a trans brake, clutch car or a very high stall converter. If you are running a foot brake car with a 3500 stall you should have no problem. I ran a stock 9" rear end out of a Granada Sport with 28 splines and a 4.56:1 gear for 5 years with not a single problem out of it. The car weighed 3000 lbs with me in it and wet, ran 7.37 at 94 mph (1/8), 11.94 at 114 mph (1/4) and pulling 1.62 60' times. I was running 28X10.5 15 Hoosier slicks and a mini spool. I flashed the converter (3800 stall) from 1800 RMP. When I built the rear end I painted a line on the axles and would pull them every winter to check them out. Never did I twist one even a little. I even ran it on the stickiest launch pad on the planet (Ohio Vally Raceway, Louisville, KY) Running a foot brake car you have an advantage of having all the rotating parts having load on them when you launch. There isn't as much shock on them at launch as there is with a clutch or trans brake. I have seen even 31 spline axles break with a mildly built 302 and a clutch.
Just a little update. I have ordered a Strange "S" nodular case. I also ordered a Strange nodular Daytona pinion support, already set up, and an ex-Nascar Detroit locker from Nine Inch Nodular Inc. , out of Mooresville, N.C. The Detroit locker has been fully gone through, with new 3.250 bearings installed. Phil says that he goes through every one that he gets, and hardly ever sees anything wrong with any of them, He says that they are in like new condition, and I wouldn't have any problems with it. He said that if I did, just to let him know and he would replace it, then he added, but you will not. Let me ad that I paid $139.99 + $15.00 shipping for the Detroit locker. I bought it Thursday night and it showed up at my door on Saturday afternoon. I told him my purpose for buying it, with my cars whole set up. I talked to Phil, owner of Nine Inch Nodular, for almost an hour, Friday afternoon , and I must say, he knows his stuff. He aked me who was I getting to do my work, and I told him that I was doing it all myself. I said, I'm in a hobby that I can't afford, so it's do it all myself or quit doing it. He told me that whenever I had a problem, to call him and he would walk me through, step by step, and I'll help you get your rearend together, and help you get hold of parts, and try to save you some money. He's also a Moser axle rep., and he's offered to sell me a set of 31 spline axles at a cost, with shipping included, that is $55.00 cheaper than the straight out catalog price. I think that I will continue to deal with Phil at NININC, exclusively from here on out. Maybe I'll get this thing together sooner than I thought. Thanks for reading, Charles.
Awesome! I paid close to $500 with shipping for mine, however it was new. Still, if i had knowledge of this place, i woulda drove down there for that price.
