I am trying to convert my car to manual and the shifter dont seem to be in the right place it almost hit the steering when I go to the reverse.

The number i found on the transmission is :

    case : RF - D2AR-7006-0
    Tail shaft : DOZR-7A040-A

I would like to know if the shifter is at the right place close to the back of the transmission.

the number i found on my shifter is 3216274 - 3306126.

    thank you

When I did my toploader, Reverse was down-left, not up-left.

shifter is in the right place.
i would think that it's a problem of the shifter handle - looks like it's bent?

Maybe its just the curve of the stick, mine wasn't close with a straight stick

My shifter its it 14" high. Also 2 of my rod need modification i think it because it from a torino. If i bought an install kit for mustang do i need to modify the rod or it a bolt on ? Can i remove the stick from this shifter ? Also do you have a part number for the stick ?

i have a complete 4spd toploader with a hurst competition plus from a mustang in my comet. fit without issues.
your shift handle looks like a hurst, too. iirc, the chrome stick can be taken off. try to slide some small metal plates left and right of the shifter to release it.

Your stick looks like some of the factory ones that you couldn't unbolt. I would cut 3/4 of the way through it near the bottm, bend it to where you want it, then weld back together.

That's where it is with the factory shifters. Hurst's have it reversed to prevent shifting from 1st into reverse in the "heat of battle"

It's bent the wrong direction and you can't unbolt it and swap levers. Either do what BMC said or get a different Hurst Shifter that's straight up and bent rearwards. Oh, and a Torino shifter install kit won't have the correct shifter rods for your Mustang tailhousing. Toploaders had several different tailhousings(with different shifter locations) in two lengths (for cars) Yours is a Mustang tail with a small block shifter location.

That appaears to be an factory Ford Hurst shifter. I would advise not cutting it up if it is. They would bring enough money used to buy a new aftermarket Hurst shifter that you need. I believe the round shaft with the Hurst flats on each side was only used by Ford. The knob looks like a '72 Torino unit and I have seen the knob alone bring $75 or more on Ebay.

Looks too "new" to me for it to be an original O.E. Ford/Hurst shifter. Maybe a repop ? Could be wrong though.

I just finished the modify the rod. It was more easy that i though. I had only the gring at one place the 1-2 rod and modify the bend on the 3-4.

I had the same idea to cut and weld the shifter but i had no idea that the shifter worth something. The shifter look in good shame because i cleaned it before installing it. You can see it when i bought the kit. I removed the all the part on a 73 torino gran sport.

Now i need to find if the shifter are worth selling it or i should cut and weld the stick.

You can change the direction of reverse by installing the reverse lever at the transmission 180 degrees - instead of left and up it will be left and down - that may solve your problem without modifying the stick.
