Hello forum, I have a question for you. I am trying to start my engine a 351W using the 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order in the counter clockwise direction but to no avail. The person that I brought the engine from had installed a high performance cam in the engine, is there a different firing order high performance cams. The history of the motor is 1974, I am using MSD Distrubutor and Box and getting proper fire. I know not having more cam information is a big problem. Thanks, TonyJ
Hey Darren thank you for the information I will give that a try tomorrow. I knew something was not adding up with all of the backfire I was getting and the advancing and retarding of the distributor was not helping the situation at all.
If you have trouble on firing order, take both valve covers off and watch you intake valves as you hand turn engine over. That will tell for sure of firing order.
You should hear a slight miss with 2 cylinders firing on the exhaust stroke but it shouldn’t stumble, spit and stutter THAT much to keep it from being drivable.
Here is a description, all depends on the cam. Only two so its a 50/50 shot. http://www.302w.com/Firing-Order.aspx
You guys have given me alot of information to work with and hopefully when I get home this afternoon the Mav should fire. I have no problem admitting that I am a novice at this, but with the help from the forum, things are coming together. I will let you know how it does this afternoon. As always thanks, TonyJ.
