Was just told a fellow Mav Forum Buddy that i got ducked on my rear end...Its the bastered 7.9 or something that cant be ungraded. Well hopefully i get a upgrade soon...I want to be laying down some Rubber soon!
8" rears are a dime a dozen. Many of the later models (73 or 74 and up) have the 5-lugs. Or look a bit for a 9" that will fit. Being in California, you may have a better chance of finding one than most of us.
I did convert to a 5 lug with this rear end from a granada but was told i cant do much with it... but i am on the hunt know for a 8.8 or better... looking for a posi now. Thanks for the support guys!
They're not a dime a dozen around here. The hot rod guys want them because of the width. A Maverick 5 lug rear end can fetch $250.
Not in Junkyards, I see at least (10) 9"s for every (1) 8". I even made a thread about it a years back: 8 more popular? My last trip to the junkyard I found none of them, but there was 3 cars with a 9". Not including the trucks, I didn't even bother looking at those. Basically like predfan mentioned the street rodders swipe them all up.
Problem with most 9" is that they have to be narrowed adding to the cost of the rear. Unless you can find a 57 wagon or Ranchero rear. They are a direct bolt in.
Sounds like you got one out of one of the newer 80's model Grenadas, not the 9" version as in the late 70's models.
jear30200 came by my shop. a real nice guy. we talked mavericks and when i was checking his car out noticed the rear end. its the 8.7 that was used in the granadas. he said he got it from a granada so it makes sense. when i get my next maverick ill build the 8" out of that car for his.
Yes he said right it is an 8.7 WER axle, they are pretty much granada exclusive, they look alot like the 8.8 but they dont coexist. If I remember correctly they were only used for one or two years in the late 70's Another thing is they all had retarded gear ratios like 2.45:1 and 2.75:1...(was going to put one into an old jeep of mine till I found out what it was, the 8.8 is a common jeep swap)
they look allot alike untill you see them next too each other here is an 8.7, crappy pic I know. Here is an 8.8 If you notice the 8.8 cover is more square then the 8.7
