My '74 has an alarm system that i want to remove. The car runs just fine. If I unplug a black box under the dash it wont crank. How big a job is this?? This alarm seems to be factory, or someone took alot of time re-taping the wire harness under the dash. Should I proceed?? Or leave it alone.
No Maverick came with a factory alarm, but in 74 they had a "seat belt interlock", and that could be the box you're talking about. If it is, there are a few posts on how to remove it, should come up with a search for "yellow box". But I should add, they have been seen in different colors.
The black box interrupts the start circuit. If the wires are just cut and spliced into the alarm, you can remove the alarm wiring and reattach the factory wiring. If the installer cut out sections of the harness, you would need to repair those wires. Of course, this only applies if it is not the aforementioned seatbelt interlock
thanks for quick replies. The car does have the seat belt circuit judging by my service manual and the hardware under hood, although it has been altered to allow the car to start with out clicking the belts. I thought originally the "box" was part of the aftermarket alarm. Will this control box go bad and disable the car?? I know anything is possible. The whole thing started when I couldn't locate the horn wire. Any Idea what color wire should run to the front of the car from under the dash.?? I think most of the horn circuit was altered when the alarm was installed. The actual horns have been replaced be a loud speaker that doesn't work.
