As of late, my car has been giving me some feedback when I drive. It felt like a slight rattle or wobble. I finally concluded that it was the bearing on the drivers side and took it in to be looked at. Nothing is ever this easy. It looks like the drum itself is the only thing in decent shape, the hub, bearings, and seals need to be swapped out. The bearings are loose in the hub, likely due to years of wear. My guy backed it up with grease and tried to tighten it up as much as possible, which has it running smoothly again (for now) but it looks like I've got to get this taken care of. Trouble is, I can't seem to find hubs. Drums they carry everywhere, bearings are no sweat, but hubs I cannot yet locate. Anyone have any ideas?

Additionally, this job SEEMS to be straight forward, is this something I could tackle myself?

    Thanks all!

Are you sure you don't just need the bearings repacked? The hubs usually don't go bad, maybe you just need new bearing s and races. The only reason I can think you would need a new hub is if a race spun in the hub. Replacement is easy I would say a 2 out of 10 on difficultly.

I can only go with what the guys at the shop told me, as I don't know much myself. They showed me a bearing that was wiggling in the hub, apparently the fault of the hub. What is a race (other than guys driving fast) and how would it damage the hub?

Now is the time to switch to disc brakes and leave all your troubles behind.

The bearings themselves will wiggling a little if they need a grease repack, they'll also wiggle some if they had them off the car to show you. The race is a metal ring that is pressed into the hub, the race is the part the bearing actually rides on. The only way the race can damage the hub is if the race spins in the hub and makes it so the race won't have a tight fit in the hub. I not sure what causes it, probably really overheated brakes.

Man, I wish. I don't have the money for it yet, but I'm hoping within the year.

Ah, ok. Thanks! Sounds like I may have encountered a shop that doesn't quite know how these older cars work. It's running well, no thumping, so I may wait until I can get it into my local speed shop for a look by the more knowledgeable guys. Thanks!

Someone who is knowledgeable and nearby is just about perfect. I'll have to see what part of GA he's in, might well be worth the trip!

Hubs do go bad. Plenty of Mavericks in he junkyards to get a hub. Is this a 4-lug or 5-lug hub?

Wasn't Scott (Scooper) parting out his old drum brake stuff in another thread?

These are 5 stud hubs. The car came with some stock Mustang wheels from a 90's era Mustang (that's another problem for another day) so the studs match those.

I drove it a lot today and it's running so normally you'd be hard pressed to know it was having an issue yesterday. At this point I feel like I've got to get that second opinion.
